Build your own Stage...

Navigating the American Dream and Corporate Realities.

In Swahili, there’s an idiom that goes as such, “Padogo pako sipakubua pa mwengine…"

(Your work is not built on the large works of others but rather focus on building your own)

Dear friends and supporters of Barr Aqdas Studios,

With nearly eleven years dedicated to pursuing creative objectives in the United States and navigating daily life, I have observed the complexities inherent in the American dream. While opportunities are abundant, realizing personal and professional fulfillment often involves navigating significant challenges, particularly within corporate environments where survival and office dynamics can significantly influence career trajectories.

Workplace Trials: Lessons from the Trenches.

Transitioning from hotel jobs to entry-level property management roles to provide for myself, I encountered various challenges along the way. At times, I experienced my tips being manipulated, and later had commissions withheld, along with passive-aggressive remarks that continued into later parts of my real estate career. While I eventually advocated for myself, I sometimes regretted not acting sooner.

Recovering Losses and Investigating Patterns.

Persistence paid off, at times despite being confronted by corporate skepticism—intimidating texts, jealousy, sabotage, meetings, and calls questioning my commission numbers despite already existing transparent reports accessible to all. This led me to launch my own investigation, uncovering a pattern of behavior that persists across companies.

I borrowed lessons from the Swahili idiom to reflect deeply on my methods, my motivations, failures, and the wider context of what my version of the American dream would become—a vision that remains intoxicating, even as recent political unrest and ignorance create new obstacles and reveal troubling realities. I remain aspirational with the people who are looking for a life of growth.

The Creative Path: Building Legacy Through Adversity

As Creative Director of Barr Aqdas Studios, I’ve spent the last few years cultivating new ways to heal and create. My mission is to build a legacy of conscious living, not just for myself, but for all who enter into partnership with the studio.

Experience as Enrichment: Sharing Wisdom Forward.

My life—colored by struggle, but also triumph—continues to be enriched as Barr Aqdas Studios expands its approach. The lessons learned along the way are lifelines, valuable for anyone navigating similar waters. I hope that sharing these practices and insights will benefit others, fostering resilience and creative growth.

Quick Tips from the Director’s Desk.

  • Rest, drink water, and take time to reset.

  • Keep coworkers and managers off your social media—especially if social comparisons start to creep in.

  • Live intentionally: don’t rush through the journey, and don’t let distractions derail your focus.

  • Learn subjects that help you build a life of systems, build your principles towards living a virtuous, integrous life.

  • Accept mistakes and when you have failed, adapt with the new lessons in mind.

With gratitude,

Shoghi
